BiographiesDr. Jimmie Holland and Laurie Fenton, president of the Lung Cancer Alliance, will be the featured speakers at the Memorial Sloan Kettering Event in New York City on November 15.
Starting in the mid 1970s, she conducted some of the first research studies relating to the prevalence and nature of psychological problems in patients with cancer. In 1977, Dr. Holland established the first Psycho-Oncology Committee in the Cancer and Leukemia Group B, a National Cancer Institute Clinical Trials Group. She was the founding president of the International Psycho Oncology Society (1984) and of the American Psychosocial Oncology Society (1986). Dr. Holland was senior editor of the first textbook in psycho-oncology, The Handbook of Psycho-Oncology (1989). Similarly, she started the first international journal in the field, Psycho-Oncology, in 1992, and continues as co-editor. She was selected as a fellow of the Institute of Medicine in 1995. Dr. Holland and Sheldon Lewis co-authored a book to help patients and their families cope with cancer, The Human Side of Cancer, Living with Hope, Coping with Uncertainty (2000). Dr. Holland also serves as chair of the National Comprehensive Cancer Network’s Panel on Management of Distress. In 2000, she received the American Psychiatric Association’s Presidential Commendation. The American Cancer Society awarded her its Medal of Honor for Clinical Research in 1994, as well as the ASCO/ACS Lecture and Award in 2003. In April 2005, the Joseph Burchenal Award for Clinical Research was granted to Dr. Holland by the American Association for Cancer Research.
Laurie brings extensive public policy experience to the Alliance. She joined The Lung Cancer Alliance after serving as Chief of Staff for the Secretary of the United States Department of Commerce, where she helped set the strategic and policy direction of that Department. Among her other accomplishments, Laurie has served as Chief of Staff for senators and representatives, during a public sector career. Laurie also has served in the private sector as a Federal Relations Director for a Fortune 500 company. Laurie is a graduate of The George Washington University
and Harvard University’s Kennedy School of Government Senior
Management in Government Executive Program. An avid equestrian,
she resides in Middleburg, Virginia.
